Chris Brody is a 23-year-old petty criminal. He’s had run-ins with the law before but with little consequence. Now things have changed. A new, tough-on-crime government is in place and young punks like Chris are going to truly suffer for even minor offenses. They aren’t going to spend a few months in a prison cell, eating three meals a day and watching TV. Instead, they are going to a “prison of pain” to feel the full force of the state’s power. Standing in a small cell, Chris is confronted by his jailor who announces it is his duty to describe the tortures that will be inflicted upon his lean, muscular body. Chris listens in horror as the man describes electrical shocks, flogging, long-term pain positions, crucifixion and hours on the rack. “This can’t be happening,” Chris mutters. But it is.
